The
John Joseph Mechi Garden
|
|
This
garden is dedicated to the Victorian entrepreneur John
Joseph Mechi. The design pays tribute to Mechi's
connection to RABI, which is celebrating its 150th
anniversary this year, and to Wilkin & Sons who are
celebrating 125 years of producing preserves at Tiptree.
Mechi divided his time between London and Tiptree Hall
in Essex, where he became known for pioneering new
agricultural techniques. In 1860, his concern for the
welfare of those working on the land led to the founding
of RABI. In 1885 A C Wilkin, a neighbouring farmer,
started making preserves from fruit grown on his farm,
and in 1913 Wilkin & Sons purchased Tiptree Hall. |
