This
garden has been inspired by Konpira-san, a mountain and
Shinto shrine in Kagawa, Japan that is noted for the 1368
steps leading from the base of the mountain to the shrine
above. A stone wall of aji granite symbolises the steps and
castle. The ukijima (floating islands) evoke the islands of
the Seto Inland Sea when viewed from the top of the
mountain, represented here by the deck. Turf depicting the
UK and a pine signifying Japan are included in the design,
uniting the two nations in this modern, Japanese-style
garden. Konpira-san presents a small slice of what Kagawa
has to offer, highlighting this historically significant
landmark and utilising materials that can be found in the
region. |
