Ornamental grasses are fantastic for softening hard landscaping and using as a contrast to plants with bold outlines. They come in a wide range of shapes and subtle shades to suite every garden style.

Jumbo Ready Plants are grown in individual cells and measure approximately 8-12cm in height from the root of the plant to the top of the stem.  They are despatched later in the season as we have grown them to a larger size for you and are ready to be planted straight out into the garden.

The colourful foliage of these half hardy perennial fountain grasses make them ideal for summer border and container fillers. A striking evergreen grass-like perennial that is very tolerant and can be grown almost anywhere - by the water's edge, slightly submerged or in a grass garden. This dwarf grass also makes a great container plant.
 
Acorus gramineus 'Golden Edge' - Japanese Rush Acorus gramineus 'Golden Edge' - Japanese Rush
Golden Edge has a compact habit with leaves that are aromatic when crushed. The green blade leaves have a distinct yellow stripe down the middle.
 
Anemanthele lessoniana - Pheasant's tail grass Anemanthele lessoniana - Pheasant's tail grass
One of the best and most versatile evergreen grasses, this will thrive in sun or shade, and glows shades of copper, gold and bronze in the autumn, hence its common name, Pheasant’s Tail Grass. It has a soft, arching habit, so plant it among shrubs for textural contrast, or in a mixed or herbaceous border.
 
Avena sativa - Cat Grass (Seeds)
Not an ornamental grass but we thought we would add it here anyway - sometimes our feline pets require grass as an addition to their diet and/or digestion. Sown like indoor cress, and growing almost as quickly, this will provide the greens they need.

A matt forming evergreen grass with purplish tinted, blue-green leaves. Throughout summer, locket-shaped, green-purple flowers, which fade to buff, hang from wiry branches. Their flowers are excellent for drying.

This very attractive evergreen grass with showy heart shaped flowers, emerging green then turning gold with maturity. Propagation is by division in the spring, just as the new growth is appearing.
 
Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' - Feather reed grass Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' - Feather reed
A stiff, erect habit is the defining feature of this grass, named after the famous German plantsman who introduced it to the public in the 1950s. Plant it en masse to form a feathery screen, or in small groups to add height and definition to a perennial border. It also looks good planted next to buildings. This is one of the earliest perennial grasses to get going, with shoots appearing in early spring, followed by flowers that are green first, then fade to buff.

Fine upright leaves which turn yellow in autumn and remain upright and bright gold-yellow. Narrow brown-bronze flowers. These later bleach to straw but persist over the winter.

A tall, dramatic grass with an upright, architectural habit, this will stand to attention in a perennial border, or can be planted en masse as a screen. Fine leaves initially have yellow margins, which fade to white as the flowers emerge. Both the leaves and flowers turn a wonderful wheat colour in late autumn and should be left to add winter interest in the garden.

useful, clump-forming, upright grass that will thrive in sun and partial shade, this is grown for its tall, fluffy flower heads that are silvery-grey with pinkish-purple tints. Creating a gently arching fountain of grey-green foliage, which takes on buttery shades in autumn. The emerging growth can be a bit tatty, so place it in the middle of the border. Its best planted in full sun as it tends to flop over more in shade. It has been given the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.

'Jenneka' is a striking golden variegated dwarf evergreen sedge that forms neat mounds of arching foliage. A great grass for adding interest between perennials and shrubs or beside water.

This is a lovely Sedge. A very architectural, slightly arching tufted grass that has bronze-red foliage with curled blonde tips. The evergreen foliage looks great in a grass garden or adding shape and drama to a mixed border.

An unusually coloured ornamental grass, with attractive, fine silver-green foliage and a lax habit. Planted densely, Carex comans ‘Amazon Mist’, takes on a misty appearance that adds texture and movement to your borders. This low maintenance evergreen grass is easy to care for and quick to establish in borders and containers.

Carex elata 'Aurea' - Bowles' golden sedge Carex elata 'Aurea' - Bowles' golden sedge
Named after the famous botanist and author, EA Bowles, who discovered the native species in East Anglia, this is a gorgeous, deciduous, ornamental grass with rich yellow leaves, edged in green. It's useful for brightening shady areas, for filling gaps in borders and planting by water, where the fine leaves contrast brilliantly with larger leaved plants.  In early summer, it throws up long spikes with brown, feathery flowers. The variegation is best in partial shade - specimens in full sun can end up looking bleached.

Brown leaved sedge, forms mop head. ginger in colour, tolerates most soils - Good in sun to part shade.

Broad finely tapered green leaves, margined in cream. Forms gently gently arching evergreen clumps.
 
Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' - Japanese sedge Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' - Japanese sedge
A small, evergreen, ornamental grass that forms low hummocks of striking dark green leaves with a central strip of creamy yellow. In mid to late spring it bears brown flower spikes on long stems. It looks good planted with other ornamental grasses with contrasting foliage.

A striking dwarf evergreen sedge that forms a small tussock of yellow striped leaves. Plant in a grass garden or to the front of a mixed border for the best effect.

“Weeping Sedge” Imposing evergreen clumps of deeply pleated yellow-green leaves with a Spreading habit. Pendulous red-brown flowers, on long arching stems. Cut back at the end of February before new growth begins to show.

Wiry, rich bronze foliage stands stiffly upright in a blaze of colour. Hardy evergreen perennial, Carex ‘Red rooster’ is ideal for creating year round structure, adding texture and colour to borders and containers.
 
Carex rostrata - Bottle sedge Carex rostrata - Bottle sedge
A native of lake margins, swamps and boggy ditches, this is an easy to grow sedge, which will flourish in damp to wet soil in full sun or part shade. It is one of the taller water sedges and a remarkably robust plant. It produces an attractive flower spike in mid summer which looks a little like a miniature bottlebrush. The mid green leaves can often have a bluish tinge to them and they are rarely eaten by hungry deer.

From spring to autumn the pale olive-green leaves of this ornamental grass turn a warm coppery-orange. In midsummer it bears small, brown flower spikes. Although it will take some shade, it colours up best in full sun. Grow it among other grasses or perennials, as a specimen plant, or in a large pot.

Silky, silvery-yellow flower plumes in late summer above large mounds of sharp-edged, mid-green leaves. 'Pumila' is a particularly compact and free-flowering variety of this much-maligned ornamental grass. We've chosen it as one of our recommended plants since it makes an excellent all-year focal-point for the smaller garden.

This is an old favourite which still performs. A great dramatic plant especially when displaying a full head of flambouyant plumes.

This ornamental grass produces attractive neat tufts of fine, grey-green foliage to form very uniform and compact clumps. Evergreen perennial grass, Corynephorus ‘Spiky Blue’ is quick to establish in borders or containers, adding different colours and textures to your garden.

The neat, densely tufted evergreen foliage makes this a perfect grass for the wildflower meadow. The dainty silver-tinted, purple spikelets appear like clouds in summer, and are a real feature well into the autumn. These are easy and reliable plants that will tolerate some shade.

'Bronze veil Tufted Hair Grass' Dense clumps of stiff leaves with delicate bronze-yellow plumes. Attractive seed heads remain into winter.
 
Deschampsia cespitosa 'Goldtau' - Tufted hair grass (syn. Golden Dew) Deschampsia cespitosa 'Goldtau' - Tufted hair grass
A mound-forming, evergreen grass that’s particularly versatile, as it thrives in both sun and light shade and the flowers persist well into autumn.  Silvery, reddish-brown flower spikes appear from early to late summer above dense mounds of slender, arching, mid-green leaves. The feathery inflorescences of this elegant, ornamental grass mature to a soft golden yellow and shimmer like a golden cloud as it catches the light. Compact and easy-to-grow, it looks gorgeous spot-planted among perennials, in groups towards the front of a border, or in a rock garden.
 
Elymus magellanicus - Blue wheat grass Elymus magellanicus - Blue wheat grass
Originating from coastal areas in South America, this tough little grass will thrive in exposed positions in full sun. Its silvery blue, semi-evergreen foliage may die off in colder winters, but it is extremely eye-catching throughout summer. Throughout summer stiff, upright stems are topped with bluish-purple flower heads up to 20cm long, which gradually fade to a biscuit colour as they mature.

A Beautiful mound-forming perennial grass with arching leaves that turn wine-red as they mature. In late summer and early autumn it produces masses of grey, nodding spikelets. A fabulous new ornamental grass that looks great grown in a sunny border. It copes well with drought once established and the flowers look lovely in dried flower arrangements.
 
Festuca amethystina - Festuca Festuca amethystina - Festuca
Easy to grow evergreen ornamental grass forming dense low tussocks of narrow bright blue leaves. Blue fescue is an ideal accent plant for a sunny border or rock garden. In midsummer the plant produces short spikes of blue-green flowers, effused with violet. Pest and drought tolerant, it is easy to grow though the best colour is obtained on poor, dry soils.
 
Festuca glauca - Blue fescue grass (Seeds)
Densely tufted true azure-blue grass. Effective ground cover, invaluable border or rockery plant. Sow February to July in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 15-18C (60-65F). Sow in well drained compost, just covering the seed with compost. Germination can be slow.

"Blue Fescue Grass" Slender blue-grey foliage. Densely tufted growth with blue-green flowers in May - Jul. Good for ground cover and colour all year round.

A compact, blue leaves ornamental grass, with needle-like, silvery blue-green leaves and short spikes of blue-green midsummer flowers, gradually fading to buff. Neat and rounded in shape, it looks great in a gravel garden, combined with the spires of blue and purple-flowering perennials, or with Mediterranean-style plants.

Exceptional bright blue bladed grass. Forms neat mounds, with large blue flower heads in summer.
 
Hakonechloa macra - Hakonechloa Hakonechloa macra - Hakonechloa
A small, ornamental grass native to the wet, rocky cliffs of Japan's Honshu Island, including the area around Mount Hakone, after which the species is named. It is a slow spreading, semi-evergreen grass which builds into gently cascading hummocks of bright green that are useful as a simple under storey to light shrubs and as a soft edging to paths or steps.
 
Hakonechloa macra Alboaurea Hakonechloa macra 'Alboaurea' - Hakonechloa
'Golden Variegated Hakone Grass' A dwarf Japanese form, with arching bright green and yellow striped variegated leaves moving to red tints in autumn. Makes lax slow spreading clumps with needle like flowers. Best planted in full sun but tolerates light shade well. Needs moisture, resents drying out.
 
Helictotrichon sempervirens - Blue oat grass Helictotrichon sempervirens - Blue oat grass
Tightly rolled, blue-grey leaves form a neat mound, crowned with upright golden spikelets in summer. This grass is also evergreen, which means minimal maintenance. Although it will tolerate some shade, it is prone to rust if it gets too wet. Helictotrichon looks very natural growing alongside Mediterranean-style plants. Try it in a gravel border, where its colour is beautifully offset by the honey tones of the stones, and give it room to express itself.

A beautiful annual or short lived perennial grass that produces long-bristled, pale green seed heads, that are flushed with red or purple and fade to light tan as they age. These feathery flower spikes are useful for cutting and drying if picked early. They usually produce loads of seed, so will come back year after year if they are in a good spot. It is great in seaside plantings as it is quite tolerant of salt, but avoid planting near livestock as the barbed awns around the seeds can cause problems if eaten.

Blood-red spikes that fade to bright green at the base and become transluscent with age make this grass a spectacular addition to the perennial border. It takes a while to strut its stuff, but in late summer, it shines like a jewel before it dies back. Imperata cylindrica is particularly effective planted with other grasses, or shown off in a container.

'Red Baron' is a striking grass. The tall upright leaves emerge green, with tips turning totally red by late summer and more coppery in winter. A grass to add interest to a mixed border where the changing foliage colour will add interest and drama.
 
Koeleria glauca - Blue hair grass Koeleria glauca - Blue hair grass

A tuft-forming evergreen grass with pretty, grey-green leaves, and dense silver green flower spikelets that fade to buff in the autumn. It prefers dry soils and will tolerate an exposed spot, but it is short lived, so may need to be replaced in a few years. It makes a striking edging to a path or border, and looks great in a gravel garden.
