A gorgeous perennial grass with attractive, dense clump forming, glaucus blue, broad, spiky foliage. Looks stunning in borders, as well as making a spectacular container plant for a sunny patio. In the second year tall, blue changing to buff, flower spikes appear.

“Wood Rush” Bright green narrow tapering leaves. Forms dense clumps of tall spikes with warm golden-brown flowers. Good ground cover in dry shade.
 
Luzula nivea - Snowy woodrush Luzula nivea - Snowy woodrush
A slow-spreading, evergreen perennial that forms loose clumps of rough, deep green leaves. In early and midsummer sprays of pure white, tuft-like flowers appear that last for several weeks and these can be dried for flower arrangements. This is a pretty and useful ornamental grass that eventually makes a good groundcover in shadier areas of the garden. It will also thrive in a sunny spot if the soil is reliably moist.

A brilliant plant for a shady spot, this semi-evergreen grass gets going in early spring, and forms a rich, yellow mound which matures to a bright green. Delicate golden flowers form a haze in summer. Plant at the edge of a shady border, or in groups as part of a woodland planting scheme.

Millium effusum ‘Aureum’ is an attractive form of millet grass with amazing golden yellow foliage that matures to a vibrant shade of green. This delightful, spreading, semi evergreen grass looks spectacular planted in groups in lightly shaded borders or containers.

"Giant Chinese Silver Grass" Broad arching foliage hanging from upright stems. Forms large clumps with silver white plumes of flowers from July. The only Miscanthus to tolerate some shade. Good screening grass, leaves fall in winter leaving vertical standing stems.

A statuesque grass that will extend the season of interest in a mixed border, this has fine, arching leaves with a distinctive white stripe down the centre. A stunning, fountainous grass for a mixed or herbaceous border, this has narrow, silvery leaves with a white stripe down the centre. Use it to add height to a perennial border, and to give winter presence.

This is a star plant for any garden. It’s compact, and doesn’t take up too much space, but it’s also dramatic. Narrow, silvery leaves have a white stripe down the centre, and masses of upright, feathery, reddish-brown plumes fade to silver in the autumn. When the flowers catch the evening sun, the plant appears to be sitting under a silvery halo.

A statuesque grass that will extend the season of interest in a mixed border, this has fine, arching leaves with a distinctive white stripe down the centre. Its flowers are spectacular; reddish brown, silky feathers that rise upwards from their stems and glow in the evening light. This grass is quick to establish and turns a beautiful reddish-brown in autumn. Use it as a feature plant in a mixed or perennial border.

A species of hardy, perennial grasses originating in China. Their clump-forming habit, with no invasive spreading rhizomes, is easily contained within gardens of all sizes. A number of excellent breeding programmes in Europe and the USA over the past 25 years have developed varieties better-able to offer reliable flowering displays in cooler, European summers. Miscanthus 'Morning Light' is a selected sport from Miscanthus sinensis Gracillimus, and is a particularly elegant and versatile form.

A graceful, fountainous grass that takes its name from the, horizontal cream bands on the leaves. Striking, silky, finger-like flowers bloom in late summer, and stay for months, giving this plant dramatic winter presence. Use as a specimen, or in small groups at the back of a perennial border.
 
Molinia caerulea - Purple moor grass Molinia caerulea - Purple moor grass

An attractive, tuft-forming moor grass that has mid-green leaves with purple bases above which upright, feathery flower spikelets rise from spring to autumn. With its compact habit and delicate flowerheads, this is an ideal ornamental grass for the middle of a perennial border, where the the spikelets catch the breeze and provide a lacy veil for other plants. A native of acid bogs, this deciduous grass will flourish on most soils as long as they are not too dry.

Named after the well known grass expert Poul Petersen of Overdam nursery in Denmark, this relatively new variety forms good sized clumps of quite upright stems. It looks superb in prairie style planting mixed with summer flowering perennials such as Echinaceas or Achilleas, but it also has a strong enough presence to be used in gravel gardens. They are perfect for adding movement too as their delicate flower spikelets will waft happily in the lightest breeze.

As the name suggests, this grass resembles a living fountain. The arching leaves for a strong clump of foliage from which airy, see-through flowers rise in summer. These flowers emerge green and fade to shades of purple-brown then yellow, and last well into the autumn. This is a great plant for adding texture and movement into the border in summer - and the seedheads provide interest late into the year. This variety has been bred in Germany, but it has British parents, so is very happy in our climate, as long as the soil is not too dry.

The flowers of this deciduous grass have an open habit, so stand, airy and almost transparent, high above the foliage. It’s therefore ideal for the middle of a border planted among large-flowered perennials, where the purple, feathery spikelets will catch every breeze. A native of moorland, it will flourish on most soils as long as they are not too dry. It will tolerate sun or light shade, and lasts well into winter.

A graceful grass with widely arching green blades. In late summer, flowers spikes rise above the fountain-like mounds and create a lovely, airy effect - it is perfect for adding movement to the border. This is an incredibly versatile plant as it works well in mass plantings, provides a great partner to herbaceous perennials where it adds textural contrast, or it can be potted up into containers and placed on a patio.

Molinias are grown for their upright, delicate flowers that form a lacy veil in the border. They also thrive in sun and shade, which makes them particularly versatile. 'Variegata' has cream and pale green variegated leaves from which rise yellow flower stems with purple flower spikelets. In autumn the plant fades to a soft buff colour. With its compact habit and delicate flowerheads, this is an ideal ornamental grass for the middle of a perennial border, where the spikelets catch the breeze and act like a shimmering veil for other plants.

From amongst the compact tussocks of foliage, upright, willowy stems emerge in late summer and autumn carrying violet flowerspikes that sway gently in the breeze. This deciduous grass also has good autumn colour.

This hardy, clump forming, herbaceous perennial associates beautifully with grasses. Its dainty bell shaped blooms in summer are followed by dark inky-blue berries. Evergreen Lilyturf creates a spectacular feature plant in borders or containers, producing 60% truly black grass-like foliage with the remaining leaves an attractive, darker green shade.

This small, easy to grow, clump-forming evergreen perennial has strappy, inky purple, grass-like leaves. This unusual plant looks fantastic with other grasses, especially if grouped in tubs or planted into gravel, and it provides a brilliant contrast with silvery plants in sun, or bright green ferns in shade.

Huge and stately, this fountainous grass is a magnificent sight in summer, when masses of tiny, golden spikelets form an airy cloud above arching, metallic-blue foliage. Definitely a statement plant, this grass needs room to express itself , and is best planted at the back of a perennial border, or in a large garden, en masse along a path.

Easily mistaken for Japanese Blood grass (Imperata cylindrica Rubra), this grass starts off with green, strap-like leaves that turn red at the tips in June, and produces light, airy flower panicles in summer. In autumn, the foliage turns a spectacular deep burgundy. It likes full sun, and unlike Imperata, can cope with dry summers. Try it in small groups among taller grasses, or against tall perennials.

A charming, deciduous grass that forms a compact, low mound and produces long-lasting, soft, pinkish, brush-like flowers in late summer that resemble squirrel tails. Both easy to grow, and tolerant of a wide range of soil types and aspects, this evergreen grass is a valuable foil for large and small gardens alike. Unlike many other ornamental grasses, it is a cool-season grass that tends to put on new growth in autumn and spring, and dies back a little in the summer. It is during the summer period that the plant also sends up wiry, upright stems, from amongst the hummocks of grey-green foliage, which support the elongated flower spikes.

A native of central and southern Italy, this gorgeous little grass is grown mainly for its colourful foliage. It forms dense mounds of pale grey-green to grey-blue leaves, which stay on the plant throughout the year. In spring it throws up whitish green cone-shaped flower spikes, that bobble about in the breeze. Once established it can be very drought tolerant, and it looks great in a herbaceous or mixed border or wildflower meadow.

An elegant clump-forming perennial grass with arching, hair-like leaves up to 50cm long. Normally a glossy green, the foliage turns a striking orange shade in the autumn before dying back over the winter months. From late summer to early autumn, the flowers appear in open clusters on top of the slender, upright stems and have a distinctive coriander scent when crushed.

A very attractive Mexican grass for the border producing soft, wispy pony-tails. Quick to produce dense clumped plants. Sow February to July in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 15-18C (60-65F). Sow in well drained compost, just covering the seed with compost. Germination can be slow.

Wonderful, wispy, pale yellow-green leaves topped with fluffy plumes of silver-green flowers, maturing to blonde-buff. This versatile deciduous grass is ideal for a sunny gravel garden, large container or new perennial border. It's perfect for introducing movement into a planting scheme since the fluffy flower heads and foliage billow in the slightest breeze.
 
Uncinia rubra - Red hook sedge Uncinia rubra - Red hook sedge
Dwarf, evergreen grass with wonderful deep bronzy-red-orange foliage, depending on the light. This beautiful sedge is an excellent accent plant for use at the front of the border or in a large container. Best planted in a sunny, sheltered spot that does not dry out, the foliage contrasts well with variegated, black or golden-brown ornamental grasses.
