Five
basic trapping mechanisms are found in carnivorous plants: |
Flypaper traps use a sticky mucus (eg, sundews). |
Pitfall traps
trap prey in a rolled leaf that contains a pool of
digestive enzymes (pitcher plants). |
Bladder traps suck in prey with a bladder that
generates an internal vacuum (Bladderworts). |
Snap traps utilize rapid leaf movements (eg, Venus
fly trap). |
Lobster-pot traps force prey to move towards a
digestive organ with inward pointing hairs (Sarracenia
psittacina). |

The
varieties included in this collection are one of
each of the Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia), the Sundew
Plant (Drosera) and the Slug Eating Plant (Sarracenia
Pupurea). |
| The
Pitcher Plant will catch many unwanted pests in the
garden such as wasps, earwigs and flies. The Slug
Eating Plant is a natural solution to garden slugs.
It also has long lasting attractive flowers which
are ideal for flower arrangements. The Sundew Plant
catches greenfly, whitefly, midges and mosquitoes
and is especially good next to roses. All the
varieties can survive in temperatures down to -4/5°F
(-20/23°C). |
