Clematis is divided into two groups according to their flowering periods. The early flowering spring types require little to no pruning but the late blooming summer varieties need cutting right back to just above ground level.
This popular climber will even wind its way through a drab tree, poking vivid flowers between the branches. There are so many varieties (at least 300) it is possible to have a clematis in flower for most of the year.
Most clematis are deciduous, the exception being the tender "armandii", and "cirrhosa balearica", a native of the Balearic islands; these have attractive evergreen foliage and dainty flowers which make an attractive feature in the winter garden.
The majority of the species have small flowers, but they are very fast growers, and so are very useful for covering up eyesores. Their greatest contribution lies in the wide variety of hybrids created over the last 100 years. By crossing species, hybridists have created clematis that will flower longer in beautiful shades from deepest purple to white.
The ideal time to plant clematis is in the Autumn. The plant is encouraged by the warm soil to put its energy into producing roots. Limy soils are best but they will grow in any good garden soil.
Clematis needs to have its roots nice and cool in the shade and its head in full sun.
Clematis should be planted at least 40cm from walls and 60cm from the base of a tree. Plant the root ball 10cm below the surface of the soil. This encourages new roots from the base of the trunk. Apply a good mulch after planting and water well.
