 Description:
A genus of hard hardy to frost tender herbaceous perennials grown for their exotic leaves and flowers. Ideal for summer bedding or for containers. Cannas prefer a position of full sun and need to watered well in dry weather. There are many cultivated varieties that come in beautiful and exotic colours such as yellow, orange, pink and red, see below. The blossoms of the cultivated varieties are much bigger than the canna indica.
 Care:
Winter Protection
In mild areas with free-draining soil, Indian shot plants can be left to overwinter in the ground, but in colder areas these half-hardy perennials, need to be lifted and stored to protect them from the worst winter weather. Do this as soon as the first frosts have burnt the leaves black. Then cut back the top-growth to 15cm (6in) and lift the plants from the ground. As much soil as possible is cleaned off, before trimming any straggly, fine roots. Store them in boxes of dry compost to overwinter them in the garage, although any cool but frost-free place would do. The tubers are replanted in the spring once the danger of frosts has passed.
 Propagation:
Seeds: Indian shot has very hard seeds with a dense coat. These need to be scarified and soaked in water prior to planting.
Division: Divide plants February to March, see if a rhizome has several eyes or new young shoots; if so, slice it up so each piece has an eye and set of roots. Put each in a pot filled with multi-purpose compost and stand in the warmth. Water gently at first, then increasingly as growth begins. Don't plant until after the last of the frosts.
