Ornamental grasses are fantastic for softening hard landscaping and using as a contrast to plants with bold outlines. They come in a wide range of shapes and subtle shades to suite every garden style. Most gardens can accommodate several varieties. The range in sizes of grasses for the garden is wide, from the  'Great Reed - Arundo Donax' (3m) to Blue Hair Grass - 'Koeleria glauca' (50cm).

Elijah Blue Fescue
'Festuca glauca Elijah Blue'
Simply the best blue leaved ornamental grass, with needle like silvery blue-green leaves and short spikes of blue-green midsummer flowers, gradually fading to pale tan.

Bowles' Golden Sedge
'Carex elata Aurea'
An elegant, ornamental grass with rich yellow leaves, edged in green. Useful for brightening shady areas, for filling gaps in borders and planting by water, it requires a light, moist soil. The variegation is best in partial shade - specimens in full sun can end up looking bleached.
Feather Reed Grass
'Calamagrostis x acutiflora Karl Foerster'
The pink-bronze summer flowerheads of this strongly upright ornamental grass fade to a wonderful wheat colour and persist well into winter. Excellent as a specimen or mass planting, it looks particularly striking close to buildings. Best in moist, humus-rich soil in full sun - in shade the stems tend to topple over.
Pheasant's Tail Grass
'Anemanthele lessoniana'
A beautiful evergreen grass with brownish-green leaves turning shades of rich orange and red. Pheasant's tail grass makes an excellent, all-year accent plant for a sheltered, sunny border. Providing much-needed structure and colour in the winter garden, the faded flowerheads are best removed to prevent it from self-seeding.
Korean Feather Reed Grass
'Calamagrostis brachytricha'
Attractive pink plumes are produced in summer on this tidy-looking ornamental grass. A wonderful accent plant for a sunny garden border where the plumes fade to a delicate bronze, and can are great in cut-flower arrangements. Best planted in full sun as it tends to flop over more in shade.
Feather Reed Grass
'Calamagrostis x acutiflora Overdam'
This versatile, variegated grass has pale yellow margins and stripes which quickly fade to white. Equally suitable as a specimen or mass planting for a sunny, moist site, the pink-bronze summer flowerheads mature to a wonderful, wheat colour and provide interest in the winter months.
Japanese Sedge
'Carex oshimensis Evergold'
Attractive ornamental grass forms low hummocks of striking dark green leaves with a central strip of yellow-cream. In mid to late spring the plant bears brown flowerspikes. Looks good planted with other ornamental grasses with contrasting foliage.
Pink Pampas Grass
'Cortaderia selloana Rosea'
Tall, pink-flushed, feathery plumes in late summer above large mounds of sharp-edged, mid-green leaves. This unusual pink form of pampas grass looks wonderful planted by water or set in the middle of a sunny, well-drained lawn. One of the largest varieties currently available, it's perfect for a medium or large garden.
Hakonechloa
'Hakonechloa macra'
A small ornamental grass, forming arching clumps of narrow-leaved foliage. In late summer and autumn it produces nodding, pale green flowerspikes. A deciduous grass that looks lovely planted in bold groups, or mixed with other ornamental grasses, such as Festuca glauca 'Blue Elijah'.
Hakonechloa
'Hakonechloa macra Alboaurea'
An eye-catching small ornamental grass, forming arching clumps of vividly striped bright yellow and narrow green striped foliage. The leaves keep its colour throughout the season, and often when its grown in full sun it develops a slight reddish tinge. In late summer and autumn, pale green, needle-like flower spikes are produced. An outstanding grass for growing on its own in a striking container.
Blue Oat Grass
'Helictotrichon sempervirens'
Tightly rolled grey-blue leaves, topped with purple-tinted flowerspikes on stiff, upright stems in early and mid-summer, maturing to a straw colour. This handsome, evergreen, ornamental grass is perfect for a well-drained gravel garden or new perennial border.
Blood Grass
'Imperata cylindrica Rubra (Red Baron)'
Slow-spreading, clump-forming grass with mid-green leaves which turn blood-red from the tips downwards, with fluffy silvery-white flowerspikes in summer. This spectacular grass provides a wonderful contrast to golden, blue or black foliaged grasses in the border or a container.
