Chusan
Palm - Trachycarpus Fortunei |
| The
Windmill palm is one of the most cold hardy palms
available for the UK climate. |
| A
single-stemmed evergreen palm with wonderful,
fan-shaped, dark green leaves up to 75cm long. This
handsome Chusan palm makes an excellent specimen plant
for sunny exotic garden or courtyard. Although it's one
of the most reliably hardy palms it's important to chose
a sheltered spot and protect young specimens grown in
cold areas with a warm, winter wrap. |

Torbay
Palm, Cabbage Palm - Cordyline Australis |
| The
cordyline has been used in the UK for many
years and large specimen plants can often be
seen in peoples gardens and parks. |
| This
palm-like tree has arching, lance shaped, light green
leaves, retained throughout the year. An ideal specimen
plant for a sunny, protected border or patio, in
frost-prone areas protect from frost by tying up the
leaves around the crown. Perfect for the exotic garden, it is also
faster growing than the coloured foliage varieties. |

Canary
Island Date Palm - Phoenix
canariensis |
| Slender, mid- to
deep green leaflets on a stout, columnar trunk and
clusters of cream or yellow summer flowers. This
medium-sized spiky palm prefers a sunny site with
protection against the fierce midday sun. |
| An excellent
focal point for an exotic or Mediterranean-style garden,
in frost-prone areas it's best grown as a temporary summer
focal-point but must be moved indoors in autumn. |

Dwarf
Fan Palm - Chamaerops
humilis |
| Dense clusters
of yellow flowers from May to August almost completely
hidden by large, lustrous, fan-shaped greyish-green leaves
up to 1m (3ft) long. This bushy, dwarf fan palm makes a
handsome and easy-to-grow plant. |
| While it can be moved
outside during the summer months, it must be protected
indoors from harsh, winter frosts. |

 |
Mexican
Fan Palm - Washingtonia Robusta |
| An
easy-to-care for palm that lends a tropical look to any
room, conservatory or patio during the summer months. It
is especially good when there is plenty of space as its
wonderful leaves grow up to 60cm (2ft) wide. |
| The
fan-shaped leaves are bright green with fibrous threads on
the end of each blade. Happy to be indoors in winter, this
palm can also grow outdoors in summer in a sunny spot. |

Travellers Palm -
Ravenala 'Madagascariensis |
| In my
opinion Ravenala - the traveller's palm is one of
the most beautiful and architectural plants on the
planet. It is not a true palm but a member of the
bird-of-paradise family (Strelitziaceae). |
| Its
called the travellers palm because the stems hold
water that can be used by thirsty travellers. |
