Ceanothus is a genus of shrubs or small trees in the buckthorn family 'Rhamnaceae'. The genus is native to North America, especially California.

This handsome, evergreen shrub has fluffy clusters of sky-blue flowers from August to October and small, glossy, bright green leaves.It has a strong, upright habit and is ideal for training on a sunny wall, or for the back of a south or west-facing shrub border or sunny wall. Although it is one of the hardier varieties of Californian lilac, it does needs protection from strong winds.

It makes a superb specimen plant for a south or west-facing border among spring-flowering bulbs, and when has finished flowering, provides an excellent foil for later-flowering deciduous shrubs and perennials. It needs a protected site, as the deeply veined, dark green leaves are easily scorched by cold, drying winds.
