Species - Australis
Common Names: Cabbage Tree, Ti Kouka (Maori), Not a true palm tree but these common names are in regular use.....Torbay Palm, Cabbage Palm, Cornish Palm, Dracaena Palm, Grass Palm & Manx Palm.
This tree was formerly called 'dracaena'.
Habit: Evergreen tree
Growth Rate: Medium to Fast
Height: 10m UK - 15m New Zealand
Spread: 3-4m
Flowering period: July to August
Flowers: The flowers are creamy white, each flower small, about 1 cm diameter with six tepals, and produced in a large, dense cluster 50 to 100 cm long. The fruit is a white berry 5 to 7 mm in diameter.
Position: Full sun to partial shade
Hardiness: Half Hardy - Mature plants are quite hardy, younger plants need winter protection by tying up the leaves and covering with 'Horticultural Fleece'.
Soil: Any but prefers deep humus rich free draining.
Origin: New Zealand
Wildlife Benefits: Not native but bees really enjoy the flowers and birds eat the seed. Bird nests have been spotted in taller specimens.

Cordyline Australis - Torbay Palm / Cabbage Palm
The Cordyline has been used in the UK for many years and large specimen plants can often be seen in peoples gardens and parks. This palm-like tree has arching, lance shaped, light green leaves, retained throughout the year. An ideal specimen plant for a sunny, protected border or patio, in frost-prone areas protect young plants from frost by tying up the leaves around the crown. Perfect for the exotic garden, it is also faster growing than the coloured foliage varieties.
Winter Protection: Bring indoors, enclose within a temporary greenhouse  or cover with 'Horticultural Fleece'.
