Garden Plant Database - Tibetan Cherry Tree
 Tibetan cherry tree
aka: Birch bark cherry / Paper bark cherry
 Prunus serrula
Genus - Prunus

Tibetan Cherry Tree - Prunus serrula

Species - serrula
Common Names: Tibetan cherry tree, Birch bark cherry tree, Paper bark cherry tree.
Growth Rate: Average
Height: 6-10m
Spread: 6-10m
Position: Sun to light shade
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Soil: Well drained, will suit most.
Origin: China
This small tree has really exceptional bark that peels away to produce new shiny polished mahogany trunk and stems. A real eye catcher. The canopy is not too thick either making planting around its base with shade loving plants more practical than other trees.
This tree is attractive all year round but the bark can really be appreciated in a dull winter garden.
RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit)  Prunus serrula received an 'RHS Award of Garden Merit' in 2002.

Polished mahogany coloured bark, which peels away in bands with age, is an outstanding feature of this small tree. The brilliance and shine of the bark is attractive throughout the year, especially during winter. Small, white flowers are virtually concealed by willow-like leaves in spring, followed by small cherry-like fruit.
