Soil: Fertile, well drained
Origin: Trachycarpus fortunei is native to temperate and subtropical mountainous areas of Asia including south-eastern China, Taiwan and the Chusan Islands.
This hardy palm tree is an ideal addition to your exotic border, patio or as a focal point in the garden, it produces striking fan shaped leaves up to a metre long and the single stemmed trunk is covered in course fibres that can be removed without affecting the hardiness.
Trachycarpus fortunei brings that tropical look to a cold UK garden andn is hardy down to -18ºC, my own palm has survived temperatures lower than that in the cold 2010/2011 winter, although it is worth noting that young palms may need a little protection with fleece.
