| The
Venus Fly Trap is a carnivorous plant that catches and
digests animals - mostly insects and spiders. Its
trapping structure is formed by the terminal portion of
each of the plant's leaves and is triggered by tiny
hairs on their inner surfaces. When an insect or spider
crawling along the leaves comes into contact with one or
more of the hairs twice in succession, the trap closes. |
| Successful
Growing:
Venus Flytraps ideally should not be watered with
tap water as accumulated salts in tap water may
kill carnivorous plants. Use rainwater from a water
butt or outdoor container and before use bring
indoors to acclimatise to room temperature.. Remove flowers to
reduce energy |
| Feeding:
Hand feed your Venus fly trap small insects such as flies,
spiders, maggots, caterpillars mealworms and small slugs.
Avoid hard cased exoskeleton insects like beetles, ants etc.
Do not use any insect killed by chemicals like fly spray or
slug pellets. Use insects no bigger than a third of the size
of the leaf. Only feed your fly trap when it has finished
digesting the last meal. Alternatively a very weak solution of
liquid fertiliser can be added to the compost. |
