Rockery Plants & Alpines

Most rockery plants are NOT true alpines but any low growing plant that can be used to similar effect to create a stunning display. The plants listed below are a mixture of both, all available to order online.

Alyssum
Alyssum saxatile - 'Golden Queen' Alyssum saxatile - 'Golden Queen'
Thompson & Morgan
An attractive ground-hugger with grey foliage and masses of light yellow clusters of flowers in the spring. Vigorous and showy; prune it back hard after flowering. Alyssum ‘Golden Queen’, also known as Aurinia, is vigorous and showy; just perfect for a low maintenance, ground cover display in borders and rockeries.

Alyssum - 'Oriental Night' Alyssum - 'Oriental Night'
Unwins
Dramatic violet-purple blooms smother the lightly spreading, ground hugging plants. Ideal for rockeries. Alyssum is really a hardy annual, but as it is small seeded, best results are achieved from an indoor sowing. Perfect for edging beds or a path, and very attractive in rock gardens or in a dry wall.

Alyssum maritima procumbens - 'Avalanche' Alyssum maritima procumbens - 'Avalanche'
Thompson & Morgan
If you want a sweetly scented carpet of snow white flowers, this is one of the best performers. A selection which is vigorous and uniform, starting to flower extra early and continuing throughout the season. Easy to grow and a must for beds, borders and the rockery. Flower summer. Height 6cm (2.5in).

Dwarf Aster - Aster 'Starlight'
Hardy Annual - One of the best dwarf asters available. Aster Starlight is an intriguing mixture of attractive, spider-like blooms in shades of blue, purple, scarlet and rose that smother the compact plants. Flowers early and over a long period in borders, rock gardens or patio containers.

These alpine species are particularly hardy, versatile and trouble-free and give glorious colour from spring to midsummer. They'll also reward you with a second flush of blooms in late summer!
Evergreen/semi-evergreen.
 
Helianthemum x Hybrids Mixed Helianthemum x Hybrids Mixed
Showy dwarf evergreen shrubs which spread quickly over rocks and slopes and make ideal ground cover. The attractive foliage is smothered from late spring with masses of 2.5cm (1 inch) flowers resembling wild roses in pink, lemon, copper, red, purple and white.
 
Alpine violet 'Viola labradorica' Alpine violet - 'Viola labradorica'
This alpine perennial produces masses of violet-blue flowers with neat hummocks of purplish dark green carpet forming foliage. This little viola prefers partial shade away from the midday hot sun and grows to around 10 to 18cm tall.

Half Hardy Annual - Thick clustered, tightly-knit blooms creating a floral carpet. Neat mound-shaped plants with the foliage almost obscured by the fully double flowers in a good colour range.
 
Geranium sanguineum var. striatum - striped bloody cranesbill Geranium sanguineum striatum - striped bloody cranesbill
A compact, low-growing geranium that flowers continuously until autumn, this variety has pretty pale pink flowers with darker pink veins above dark green, deeply cut leaves. It is also drought tolerant once established. Try it in a rock garden, at the edge of a raised border, or as part of a cottage garden scheme.
 
Aubretia Royal Mixed Aubretia Royal Mixed
Hardy Perennial - Low growing. Masses of spring flowers to grow borders, beds, pots and rockeries. The only Aubretia with an RHS award. Spread: 12-15 inches
 
Edelweiss - Leontopodium alpinum Edelweiss - ' Leontopodium alpinum'
Very hardy, perennial alpine plant belonging to the daisy family, with a white, woolly, star-shaped flower, found in the high mountains of Europe and Asia. Lovely to use near border edges, alpine and rock gardens, or even as a talking point in a patio planter.
 

Mimulus Mimulus - Monkey flower
Versatile, bushy plants for bedding, pots and baskets, rockeries in a wide range of colours. Trumpet shaped flowers look like little snapdragons.
 
Cyclamen - sowbread
With their pretty, marbled, heart-shaped leaves and upright, fragrant pink or white flowers, these cyclamen have a long season of interest before disappearing below ground over the summer.

Attractive, showy plants ideal for growing in rockeries or containers. Dense rosettes of foliage will produce flamboyant flowers in shades of rose-red, pink, salmon and orange.
 
Creeping Phlox
Pretty carpets of pale to deep lilac-blue flowers appear in June with magenta stars at the centre above hairy, bright green leaves. This compact, spreading, semi-evergreen woodland phlox is one of the loveliest low-growing varieties.
 
Oxalis triangularis - Burgundy Shamrock Oxalis triangularis - 'Burgundy Shamrock'
A delightful container and rockery plant. The handsome foliage is rich burgundy-red with a summer display of pink flowers over large, shamrock-shaped leaves.
 
Omphalodes cappadocica 'Starry Eyes' - navelwort Omphalodes cappadocica 'Starry Eyes' - navelwort
Sprays of gentian-blue, star-shaped flowers with a pale lilac edge appear in March and April among heart-shaped, mid-green leaves.
 

Garden Pink - Dianthus 'Warden Hybrid' Garden Pink - Dianthus 'Warden Hybrid'
A dwarf form of the popular garden pink, which forms neat hummocks of blue-grey foliage. These are studded with sprays of small, single flowers in brightest magenta for many weeks. Planted in a pot, or on a sunny terrace near to seating areas, their fragrant smell will perfume the air.
 

Geranium pratense 'Midnight Reiter strain' - cranesbill Geranium pratense 'Midnight Reiter strain' - cranesbill
Dark lilac, saucer-shaped flowers appear from May to September among deeply divided, deep purple leaves. A brand new introduction from North America, this geranium is very compact and the unusual foliage turns lovely autumnal colours. 
 
Cerastium tomentosum Cerastium tomentosum
A low spreading rock plant with silvery leaves, topped by pure white flowers. Easy and attractive, particularly useful for quickly covering sunny banks etc. Each plant having a spread of 60cm (24in). Flowers late spring/summer.
 
Primulas Primula
Primulas are beautiful low growing flowering plants that bloom mostly in the Spring. Hundreds of different varieties are available, good choices are Primula auricular, polyanthus and the native primula vulgaris.
 
Thymus serpyllum 'Pink Chintz' - thyme Thymus serpyllum 'Pink Chintz' - thyme
This mat-forming thyme produces a mass of clear pink flowers in summer. It's an ideal ground cover plant for a sunny border or rock garden. Useful for attracting bees and other beneficial pollinating insects into the garden, the aromatic grey-green leaves release a lovely scent whenever they are trodden on.
 
Arabis Arabis
Arabis are low growing structural Alphine plants with beautiful dense green foliage. They produce fragrant white flowers and will attract butterflies to your garden. Ideal for Rock or Alpine Gardens or simply cascade over walls.
 
Iris cristata Iris cristata
Originating from the mountain woods of South East USA, this lovely dwarf iris is perfect for pots on the patio, bridging the gap between spring and summer! Superb ground cover too for smothering those pesky weeds!
 
Saponaria × lempergii 'Max Frei' - soapwort Saponaria × lempergii 'Max Frei' - soapwort
A tumbling mass of soft pink, five-petalled flowers on hairy stems from June to August. This low-growing, evergreen perennial is perfect for the front of a sunny, well-drained border, rock garden or raised bed. Since it actually prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil it's a good choice for a site recently cleared of builders' rubble.
 
Alyssum maritima procumbens Trailing Rosy-Red Alyssum maritima procumbens - Trailing Rosy-Red
Compactness is out of favour with this variety. The habit is much more trailing than other alyssum making it an excellent variety tor hanging baskets, window boxes, cascading out of pots and containers and of course bedding, borders and rockeries where it spreads happily to form an excellent, lightly scented cerise carpet.
 
Campanula carpatica 'Blaue Clips' - bellflower Campanula carpatica 'Blaue Clips' - bellflower
These clump-forming, low-growing Carpathian bellflowers are perfect for softening the edges of a sunny, raised bed or rockery. They produce a profusion of blue, bell-shaped flowers on branched stems over a long period from June to September and rosettes of heart-shaped, mid-green leaves.
 
Sempervivum - Houseleek
A delightfully attractive and varied range of sun loving plants, with an assortment of vividly coloured rosettes. Height: 2.5-23cm (1-9in). Houseleeks quickly form new plants and can be repositioned to make a large mat over a couple of seasons.
 
Sedum 'Karl Funkelstein' - stonecrop Sedum 'Karl Funkelstein' - stonecrop
The fleshy green leaves have a purple tint when they first appear and this becomes more pronounced as they mature until they turn almost beetroot purple. The bright pink flowers emerge in tight clusters late in the summer and will stay on the plant for many months.
 
Candytuft : Iberis crenata Iberis crenata - Candytuft 
Whiter-than-white, petals fan down to form an umbrella like flower head with a mauve centre - and they're lightly fragrant too. The plant is covered with bloom in mid summer and viewed from a distance they resemble snow.
 
Sedum ussuriense Turkish Delight Sedum ussuriense - 'Turkish Delight'
T&M's own attractive dwarf selection, with deepest burgundy, almost black foliage and carmine-red flower umbels. Stunning in containers, borders or rockeries. Height: 10-15cm (4-6in)
 
Sedum 'Ruby Glow' - stonecrop Sedum 'Ruby Glow' - stonecrop
Succulent, greenish-purple leaves, topped with large, flat heads of ruby-red, star-shaped flowers from mid-summer to early autumn. This low-growing form of sedum is perfect for softening the front of a sunny, well-drained border. Best planted in generous drifts, the flowers are a valuable nectar source for butterflies and bees.
 
Gypsophila muralis Gypsy Gypsophila muralis - 'Gypsy'
Hardy Annual - Neat, compact mounds absolutely smothered in semi to fully-double pink flowers, gracing your summer garden. Useful for the rock garden or edging borders and excellent for hanging baskets, window-boxes tubs etc.
 
Erigeron karvinskianus - Mexican fleabane Erigeron karvinskianus - Mexican fleabane
Masses of small daisies, emerging white, then turning pink, with yellow centres, give this plant an unusual, two-tone effect. It has a long flowering period, from May to October, and is amazingly versatile, being low-growing, happy in su sun or partial shade and thriving in any well-drained soil.
