Canna - Indian Shot Plant Canna - Indian Shot Plant
Cannas originate from the rain forests of South America. The intensely coloured flowers and large leaves are excellent garden plants that bring a tropical ambience to borders and patios. In cold areas rhizomes need to be lifted and stored in a dry frost free area. Picture Left: Canna 'Striata'

Brugmansia - Angel's Trumpets
With massive exotic flowers Brugmansias can transform a patio or conservatory into a tropical paradise. Angel Trumpets are large shrubs with lush foliage and masses of delightfully fragrant trumpet flowers 8-10 inches long.

Cordyline Australis - Cabbage Tree / Torbay Palm
The Cordyline has been used in the UK for many years and large specimen plants can often be seen in peoples gardens and parks. This palm-like tree has arching, lance shaped, light green leaves, retained throughout the year. An ideal specimen plant for a sunny, protected border or patio, in frost-prone areas protect young plants from frost by tying up the leaves around the crown.

Bamboo - Various
Bamboos are actually grasses with woody stems offering attractive, lush foliage that can be used to add a tropical effect to any garden. Coming in all shapes and sizes, most are fully hardy and evergreen and can be grown all around the UK.

Arum Lily - Zantedeschia 'aethiopica'
The iconic arum lily is an exotic looking perennial with strikingly large heart shaped foliage that produces one of the most breathtaking flowers that can be grown outside in the UK. This moisture loving beauty is ideal for damp soil or a pond margin where it will quickly clump up to produce masses of wonderful blooms. In colder areas cover with a mulch of straw through the winter.
 
Dicksonia Antarctica - Tasmanian Tree Fern
With a thick mass of roots forming a trunk, up to 3m (10ft) long, mid- to dark green fronds. These impressive tree ferns are one of the oldest plants in the world and their fascinating appearance will soon catch the heart of any gardener. They add drama and style to a semi-shady spot, and will happily grow in any soil as long as the trunk is kept moist.

Japanese Hardy Banana - 'Musa basjoo'
A must have for the exotic garden, Musa basjoo is reputedly the hardiest of all banana plants and is a favourite in temperate exotic gardens.
The stem and leaves are tender and the rhizome (root) is frost hardy; although it is recommended that the roots are covered with a layer of mulch or compost over winter.
 
Agave Americana - Century Plant
This architectural plant makes a fabulous focal-point in a cool temperate greenhouse or conservatory or even as a summer patio pot plant. It has rosettes of thick, spiny-margined, spine-tipped, grey-green, succulent leaves. Towards the end of the plant's life a towering yellowish-green flower-spike of up to 8 metres appears, after which the plant dies, leaving small side-shoots to grow on. Trachycarpus Fortunei - Chusan Palm / Windmill Palm
This very hardy palm tree is an ideal addition to your exotic border, patio or as a focal point in the garden, it produces striking fan shaped leaves up to a metre long and the single stemmed trunk is covered in course fibres that can be removed without affecting the hardiness.

Gunnera Manicata - Chile Rhubarb
Gigantic, deeply-lobed, deep green leaves up to 2 metres across on prickly stalks. This majestic, architectural plant is perfect for the edge of a large pond or stream. One of the most spectacular plants that can be grown in Britain, it requires deep, permanently moist, humus-rich soil, lots of space and protection from cold, drying winds.

Passiflora - Passion Flowers Passiflora - Passion Flowers
The exotic blooms of Passiflora caerulea are followed by inedible egg-shaped, orange passion fruits that make a spectacular feature in late summer. Vigorous and easy to grow, these tropical climbers are always rewarding for their flower power.

Phormium Tenax - New Zealand Flax Phormium Tenax - New Zealand Flax
Phormiums can grow very large with upright sword shaped leaves and strange exotic flowers that attract moths. They come in a large range of colours including green, variegated, purple and black. Phormiums are frost hardy and can tolerate a wide range of soils and are great for a coastal sites as they can tolerate salt.

Yucca - Various
Yuccas are exceptional exotic plants for your garden, hardy and architectural they produce wonderful flower spikes up to 2m tall. Most varieties are hardy and look great in the exotic border or in pots on the pation. Plant in full sun with free draining soil.

Fatsia Japonica - Japanese Aralia
Despite a tender appearance, this tropical-looking, evergreen shrub is as tough as old boots once established. Gorgeously glossy, deep green palmate leaves. In autumn, creamy white flowers are produced in large panicles, which are often followed by round, black fruit. It makes a superb feature in an exotic-style garden, where the large leaves team well with bamboos and grasses.

Hosta - Plantain Lily
Hostas come in a variety of sizes from small to very large. The handsome hosta is an ideal groundcover plant for moist, well-drained areas of the garden close to an entrance or path. Coping well in sun or shade, the foliage requires protection from cold, drying winds.

Hedychium Gardnerianum - Ginger Lily
Tuberous rooted plants of great majesty for a warm and sunny sheltered spot. The strong stems that grow from the rhizomes carry fine, broad foliage and terminate in long, clear yellow, sweetly scented flower spikes that are projected by red stamens.

Spectacular, grey-green to steely blue-grey leaves up to 50cm (20in) long and spikes of brownish-crimson to deep brick-red flowers. This architectural shrub is an ideal specimen plant for a sunny, exotic-style garden in warmer areas of the country.

Kniphofia - Red Hot Pokers
Exotic foliage with tall, dazzling flowers on erect stems up to a metre in height. Young plants can be frost tender but more hardy as they mature if given a well drained soil in full sun.

Cycad - Cycas Revoluta
Cycas revoluta, one of the most primitive living plants, are very unusual and popular ornamentals. A rugged trunk, topped with whorled feathery leaves has lead to the common name ''Sago Palm'', however it is actually related to conifer and Gingko trees - all cone bearing plants which trace their origins back to the ancient flora of the early Mesozoic era.
