William
Morris Season at RHS Garden Rosemoor |
| William Morris was one of the most influential designers we have ever seen, his ideas
and philosophy were developed into the Arts and Crafts Movement and continue to
be felt strongly today. He was from a wealthy family but it was his shares in Devon
Great Consols, a copper mining company part-owned by his father, which financed
his early designing years. |
|
| Morris was greatly inspired by the fl owing lines in nature and his designs abound
with sumptuous flowers and leaves. He deplored the “cheap and nasty” mass production
of British decorative arts, and his business successfully proved that well designed
products could compete in an increasingly industrialised
world. In addition, he was a keen conservationist of historic buildings and the
environment, a writer, printer and socialist. |
