This spring the
RHS London Orchid Show heats up the capital once again as it
returns with a selection of the most beautiful, rare and exotic
orchids in the world at the RHS Lawrence Hall, Westminster.
On Saturday 15
and Sunday 16 March 2008
visitors can discover and buy orchids from the experts at one of
the world’s longest running orchid shows. Exhibitors from as
far afield as Taiwan, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil are
unveiling new orchids, as well as returning with old favourites.
From the elegant to the exquisite there are thousands of orchids
to choose from, with a plant to suit every budget.
Ushering in spring with style,
the RHS and the National Association of Flower Arranging
Societies (NAFAS) will be presenting a parade of exotic Easter
bonnets, each featuring orchids as the signature flower and
visitors will be able to vote for their favourite.
At the exclusive
Preview Evening on Friday 14 March (6.30pm-9pm) visitors can
relax with a complimentary glass of wine and have the first pick
of thousands of orchids available to buy.
Visitors to the show can talk
directly to the best breeders in the industry, enjoy free talks
on orchid-related topics and get advice from RHS experts, as
well as buy plants, books and gifts.
RHS orchid expert Lucinda
Lachelin gives her top tips on how to look after your orchid:
 |
- Over watering is probably the
biggest killer of orchids, so if in doubt about watering -
don’t, especially during the winter months when many have
slowed down their growth. Don’t go to the other
extreme, however, and treat them like a cactus.
- Keep a close eye out for
pests, catching them early on will mean control is much
easier.
- If you are able to put your
cymbidium out in the garden in light shade from late May to
mid September, you can encourage the plants to put on flower
spikes.
- As orchids come into spike do
not twist the pot around as this can result in the buds
twisting around the stem as they grow towards the light.
