With a make do and mend theme, this garden is set in the heart of the Welsh Valleys in 1947. Fuel shortages meant that food could not be transported so people were still being encouraged to grow their own. Home-made footballs and hobby horses can be spotted, and a pit pony stable doubles as a playhouse whilst its inhabitant works down the local mine. Traditional fruit and vegetables take up most of the space but the children are allowed to grow a few annuals among the crops. Gardening techniques from the period are featured, such as black cotton round the pea sticks to deter pigeons. A junk iron fence and coal slack path complete this unashamedly nostalgic picture.
