Shakespeare's Comedies Garden - The Taming of the Shrew
Shakespeare's Comedies Garden - The Taming of the Shrew
Designer: Yvonne Mathews / Contractors: Rob Carr, Dawn Dillon.

During the plague years, most of the theatres in London were closed, so Shakespeare made use of this time to write. He used to go to the Isle of Wight regularly to avoid the plague and visit his patron, the Earl of Southampton, who lived at Carisbrooke Castle. Shakespeare wrote a number of plays and sonnets during his visits to the Isle of Wight. It was during one such visit, staying at his patron's beautiful and peaceful estate, that he wrote The Taming of the Shrew. This garden, designed by Yvonne Mathews, presents a vibrant, colourful and entertaining tableau that reflects the play, emphasising the fiery temperaments of the two protagonists, and highlights the designer's passion for colour.
